FAMILY + COUPLES THERAPY

MY APPROACH

In my work with families and couple I begin with a dynamic systems theory approach meaning I aim to understand how all of the factors outside of your family/ partnership affect your communication style and functioning. I then use this same lens to consider how each member of your family or relationship is affected by the other members as well as the systems (i.e. work, school, relationships, hobbies, race, living space, etc.) that you each interact with. I will draw on these considerations to better understand each family member’s personality and needs and how and why your family is functioning in its own unique way. From here, I may use aspects of CBT, psychoeducation, psychodynamic theory, and narrative therapy to support your family/ relationship. In family and couples therapy, I hope to create a space where each member feels supported and safe to discuss their thoughts, feelings, and needs. We may cover topics that range from transitions, to support of a particular family member or partner, loss, communication patterns, and anything in between. As a therapist, I will facilitate conversations between your family members/ partners to process the struggles of multiple humans doing life together and ask you to practice new patterns of communication and interaction; however my main goal is to transition your family or partners to facilitating these conversations on your own in hopes of moving forward without the need for my support. Much like in my work with individual clients, I’ll always be curious with your family and each partner, often warm and direct, and I’ll add in a splash of humor every now and again.
